OMax: first impressions

I got my OMax this week - the one with all the active keys.

Out of the box, it didn't work with the configurator, either on Windows or Mac, and I had to contact support to get the instructions for bootloading the firmware - on Windows only, btw.

So now it works. The concept is definitely cool. The implementation is definitely early. Besides from the firmware problem, which isn't uncommon with any new hardware, the thing is physically much much bigger than a modern keyboard, e.g., the Apple keyboards. The keys are big and the distance between keys, while only a few millimeters, adds up. The keys themselves require a lot more force than a normal keyboard (and I've gotten used to the Apple kbd, which is like a laptop). The space bar often doesn't fire, which gives me fits.

Perhaps the keys will loosen up with use and get lighter feeling....?

The real disappointing aspect of the keyboard is that switching between layers takes between one to three seconds! Press Shift, for example, and the Qwerty keys switch to CAPS layer, chunkily, over a second. Switching between user layers, e.g., to have different keys for different applications, takes about *three* seconds, which is ridiculous. During that time, any animations running on the keys stop, too.

I'm hoping that Art & Company remedy these problems soon. As a software engineer, I can think of numerous ways to solve the layer-switching problems. If the USB speed is the issue (and I doubt it is) then Configurator/Driver should cache the images on the SD card and just switch between them, rather than resend them every time.

The physical size and comfort issues are what they are, I suspect, until OLED displays can be made smaller.

I also need to be able to program the thing myself - not to redo the firmware, of course, but to have my app drive mode changes (which need to be faster than 3 seconds....) Then the OMax will work for my purpose, which is user-interface research. As it is now, I can't really recommend the OMax for anyone to use as their primary keyboard, unless you really had some special need, like multilanguage, etc.

I have a brand new Optimus Maximus, and while it works as a basic keyboard on both Mac and Windows, it is not configurable on either Mac or Windows. On Mac, the Configurator "Update" dialog says "keyboard not found" on the firmware page. On Windows, it says "[Can't retrieve]". So, my $1500 keyboard is no better than a cheap one.

Macs I've tried include MacPro and MacBookPro, both running Leopard. Windows machine is running WinXP. Optimus software on both is latest-and-greatest - on Windows, the Configurator window says 0.0.0.10; on Mac it says 0.591.

Now what?

Also, is there a user site to upload layers etc? I'd love to have folks making presets for Photoshop, etc. and I'd do the same.

Finally, what about developers for Maximus? There's stuff for Mini, but gee, you'd think the expensive product would be supported, too. I have a custom app that would set the keyboard up differently in different modes, etc. - that's why we bought this thing. If it works well for this purpose (and we have full usability test labs) we may buy a bunch more. However, I'm unable to make this one work at all....
